Dixie
State College Theatre and Music Departments continue the rich, Tony Award-winning
"Tradition" of “Fiddler on the Roof,” March 1-3 and 6-10 in the
Mainstage Theater of the Eccles Fine Arts Center.
“Fiddler
on the Roof” tells the timeless story of Tevye, the lone dairyman of Anatevka, and
the test of his family’s long-steeped traditional values in tsarist
Russia.
The musical
opens with a lone fiddler settled on a roof, accompanying Tevye as he tells the
tales of life in Anatevka:
“A fiddler on the roof. Sounds crazy,
no? But here, in our little village of Anatevka, you might say every one of us
is a fiddler on the roof trying to scratch out a pleasant, simple tune without
breaking his neck. It isn’t easy. You may ask: ‘Why do we stay up there if it’s
so dangerous?’ Well, we stay because Anatevka is our home. And how do we keep
our balance? That I can tell you in one word: Tradition!”
DSC presents “Fiddler on the Roof” in
association with Music Theatre International, directed by Varlo Davenport. Consider
it a collaborative DSC masterpiece with a set design by Brent Hanson, music direction
by Ken Peterson and a live orchestra directed by Gary Caldwell of DSC’s extraordinary
music department. The show’s music was written by Jerry
Bock with lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and the book was written by Joseph Stein.
“Fiddler on the Roof “ plays March 1-3 and 6-10
on the Mainstage in the Eccles Fine Arts Center on the Dixie State College campus.
